IV vs. Oral Supplements: Why Absorption Matters More Than You Think

You take your vitamins every morning. But how much of that capsule actually makes it into your bloodstream? The answer might change how you think about supplementation entirely.

The supplement industry generates billions of dollars a year — and for many people, it produces surprisingly little in the way of results. What Happens When You Take an Oral Supplement

The Bioavailability Gap

Bioavailability refers to the proportion of a nutrient that enters circulation and is able to have an active effect. When a drug or nutrient is administered intravenously, its bioavailability is, by definition, 100% — because it enters the bloodstream directly without any intervening barriers.

For oral supplements, the picture is more complicated. Magnesium, for example, is notoriously difficult to absorb orally — depending on the form (oxide vs. glycinate vs. citrate), absorption can range from as low as 4% to around 35%. Vitamin C is better-absorbed at lower doses, but above a threshold of 200mg, the body's transport mechanisms become saturated and absorption rates drop sharply. B12 absorption from food requires a protein called intrinsic factor — and roughly 40% of adults over 40 have diminished intrinsic factor production without knowing it.

These are not edge cases. They represent common scenarios where people take supplements daily, feel no particular benefit, and assume the supplements either don't work or they don't need them — when in reality, the issue is that the nutrient never got where it needed to go in sufficient quantity.

A common example: High-dose oral vitamin C tablets cause GI distress at doses above 1–2g in many people, which limits how much can be taken.
